All of this attention focused on Council’s actions has been much too serious, let’s take a somewhat lighter look at the individuals who make up Council. Council has developed a personality over the last four years as they have worked together and addressed the many issues facing Parry Sound. The recent controversies concerning the Downtown Business Association do not, in my opinion, define the character of Council as a whole. Rather, it perhaps defines the personalities of the individual members of Council. So let’s take a look at the styles and ‘personalities’ of the individual councilors. Rather than get into any more trouble I will leave this an open-ended investigation.
Watching Council for the last four years has provided me with the opportunity to get a better sense of the individual personalities and styles of the Councillors. From a Myers-Briggs perspective I think we have one Artisan, one Rational, one Idealist and four Guardians. This is not unreasonable if you consider the distribution of the population by personality type and the likelihood that Guardians would gravitate to roles like Council. Here is a link that will introduce you to the terminology used and is a resource if you want to understand more about personality typing and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. I won’t share my sense of who is what personality type but it’s not too tough to figure out if you regularly attend Council meetings.
That may be a little too serious, let’s make it a little more fun. It’s pretty simple; match the Councillor with the TV or movie character. There is no right answer, and any one Councillor may well connect with more than one fictional character. Based on their behavior on Council I’m able to connect each councilor with at least one of the characters. Note: there are no female characters. That might have tipped my hand with respect to Councillor Keith. The fictional characters listed below exhibit primary personalities that are applicable to either men or women. Both groups are listed alphabetically. The fictional Characters include a link to their Wikipedia entry in case they are not immediately familiar.
Connor McLeod (Movie & TV, The Highlander)
Ferris Bueller (Movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Frank Columbo (TV, Columbo)
Grima Wormtongue (Movie, The Two Towers / The Lord of the Rings)
Joe Friday (TV series, Dragnet)

Ned Flanders (TV, The Simpsons)
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Movie, Star Wars)

Have fun. This is an off week for Council. I’ll see you at their next meeting May 6th.
